1970-1971 Dayton Daily News

I know most of you are saying this set is cataloged.  But in reality it is only partially cataloged I spent a few days going through microfilm at the library and re cataloged this entire set all 357 cards.  I just love when a small project explodes into a larger one.

The set runs from Apr 5, 1970 to May 26,1971 and covers baseball, football, basketball, and even some golfers and boxers, then finishes with more baseball players.  The real interesting part is the 1971 baseball players they used the same numbers on the repeated players but changed the stats and the picture hence we get the Tony Perez white hat / dark hat variation already listed.  The set numbers run to 324 but with the extra 1971s there are 357 cards in a master set.  Really doubt anyone has ever tried or really wants to put a master set of these together but to each their own which is probably why the variations have never really come to light they are incredibly rare to start with and only player collectors seem to go after them so doubtful once you get one you’d still look for another.

Only missing number is 196 the library did not have the microfilm for 11/30/1970 so that one will be a mystery until someone can track that one down.

The player lines with multiple days are repeated players they reissued so a few are double even triple printed.  And the easiest way to tell a 70 from a 71 is the 1970 had stats listed as 1969 then the stats while the 1971 had the stats listed as 1970 then the stats.

The set is too large to list here so here's a link to the checklist in pdf format.  The pictures show Rose 3 variations the first card introducing the set the second is his official card (double printed) and the last his 1971 card.

1962 Reds Postcards

I'll continue on the Reds postcards of the 60s theme and list the 1962 set.  They are almost identical to the 61 set and future 63-66 sets for that matter.  They will not have the rubber stamp autographs on them as the 61s do and to tell them from the future reds set they seem to have Cincinnati Reds centered justified below the name as opposed to future sets will be more left justified.  They do have standard postcard backs.

1979 Signature Miniatures Statues and Cards

Not too much is know about this issue but the company seems to have gone into bankruptcy and ceased production late into the run so some of the statues are extremely scarce and may not exist at all.  Manufactored by Metallic Creations they issued pewter statue in an original box (name stamped on side) with an enclosed card.  Statues are approx  3”-3 1/2" tall depending on the pose.  Card is approx 3.5" x 4.75" each player also has a facsimile autograph on the front the back has career statistics on them. The cards are unnumbered and have sequenced them in alphabetical order. The statues and the cards were available for $7.95 upon release. The players listed as SP's were produced late in the run and are available in lesser quantities than the other players listed in our checklist.

1978 MSA Wiffle Ball

Not to be confused with the 77 issue this one came in 2 formats 5 players to a wiffle ball box 3 on the outside and 2 on the inside.  Plus some were 2 on the cardboard packaging for the bats those are generally come with 2 folds on them.

The balls were issued in Regular, Softball and Junior size one could surmise that less popular sizes of products might lead to some lesser quantities of certain cards. That's why it is important to understand how these cards were distributed.  As of now 12 cards are unknown how distributed most likely 2 boxes and 1 bat still exist.

Here is a 77 vs 78 just to tell them apart the backs are different.

Here is the current checklist
